Talent Spotlight : Frédérique Gauthier

1 - Can you introduce yourself in a few words ?

[EN]     I am a very sociable person, easy to get along with and I love to laugh. I would also be described as determined and go-getter (like a good aeries ;)). In fact, that's probably why I'm a stylist !

2 - How long have you been represented by Folio ?

3 - How would you define your work ? Where do you find your inspiration ? What are your sources of work ?

« Fred has a natural sense of what is effortless and understands

how to convey comfort and confidence ».

[EN]     I like simplicity and I am very rigorous when I choose my pieces. I rarely fall into the glamorous looks that are often found in fashion. I think my work is distinguished by the elegance of the colors and textures of my looks. I also like to work with layers, transparencies and elasticity, but still, as I often say, "keep it simple". In a conversation with friends recently, my agent Anna, I thought, summed up my work well:

"Fred has a natural sense of what is effortless and understands

how to convey comfort and confidence."

When I'm looking for inspiration, I often go back to my books, which are of all genres, from architecture, to cinema, to design, to horticulture, to contemporary art. I collect many of them ! My parents work in the book industry and so I have always been fascinated by illustration, photography, drawing, painting, etc.

Finally, traveling remains my greatest source of inspiration. It's a pure joy to be able to mix with different cultures for a short time. My favorite cities to travel to are typically Tokyo, Berlin and Paris, but I have also been particularly charmed and inspired by Tbilisi, Istanbul, Seoul and Naoshima !

4 - You were published in the first Folio magazine with your work on Romy. How do you feel about this experience and what do you think of this first Folio issue ?

[EN]    I was so happy to be paired with Romy ! I've been lucky enough to work with her before and so, knowing her personality and attitude, I knew immediately what look I wanted to create for her. Romy is excellent. She was able to perfectly represent the direction I wanted to take. I would have loved to do more than one look with her, but my October was extremely busy so I had to leave the set quickly. I am still very happy with the final result. I was touched by FOLIO's initiative to put the talent of its artists and models forward in this more difficult pandemic period. I am very grateful for all the work and time that has been put into this magazine.

5 - What are your future projects ? What are your future aspirations ?

[EN]    My job is very exciting and I feel blessed to be doing it for a living. I want to work with new artists, from Montreal or elsewhere, who will continue to push me out of my comfort zone. I'm going to Paris and Portugal in May and I want to get as much inspiration as possible from these experiences. I hope to get back to new projects on a larger scale this summer and I still have in mind to work outside the country.
